Description
Patinas are chemical compounds that produce unusual and permanent color effects, natural shadings of aged appearance on metals similar to those shades caused due to natural weathering on antique metals. This helps metal fabricators to create beautiful antique finish effects on metals in a very short period of time. |
Patina finishes can be used with both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Colors produced from each of the six standard patinas are unique and vary over the area stained. The color may vary depending on the metal, application procedures, the thickness of each coat and experience of the applicator. Each of these can affect the color shading and the depth of the overall color. To some degree these variances and color shifts are desirable to create the antique look. |
There are endless possibilities of color effects that could be achieved through combinations of paint applied on the metal and the patinas used. We encourage you to experiment the effects that could be obtained from applying different color paints along with these patinas. |
Patinas, unlike paints, are not opaque and therefore will not hide faults like cracks and other blemishes. Even cracks look great when stained, like naturally occurring veins of intense color. Some metal designers even chip and scar metals before patinas are applied. Dirty or contaminated surfaces may severely limit color results. | |

Patinas should be carefully applied. It is easier to apply less but almost impossible to take some off the metal. Some people prefer to apply with a brush but we prefer a natural sea sponge which is dense in nature |
Stir the Patina well before applying. It is better not to add paint thinners since patinas need to be applied thick. If the solvent is thickened with evaporation due to previous use and improper storage, then a thinner can be used. |
Take a small amount of patina on the sponge. Wipe the excess patina on a cardboard. Too much will result in a streaking effect. |
Wipe the sponge lightly on the ironwork and repeat as often as necessary to get the desired results. |
