At Auld & White Constructors’ new headquarters, flexibility was designed into the building from day one. In the central courtyard connecting the two-building campus, a pair of custom sliding pocket gates allows the space to transition easily between an open-air pass-through and an enclosed venue for meetings and events.
Designed by Hoefer Welker and fabricated and installed by Robert James Custom Metal Fab, the gates needed to integrate seamlessly into a high-traffic corporate environment. The goal wasn’t to make a statement with hardware—it was to make the hardware disappear.
Early design concepts explored a traditional V-groove track system. While functional, the exposed track introduced a visual interruption and a potential trip hazard in a courtyard meant for daily circulation and large gatherings. For a building company rooted in clean lines and honest construction, that solution fell short.
Hoefer Welker reached out to AIDI in search of a recessed ground track that could sit flush with the finished floor while still supporting large-format sliding gates, which would be subjected to frequent use.
AIDI recommended the Comunello 287FP-G Half Round Recessed Ground Track, part of the Comunello Sliding/Rolling Gate System.
The recessed round profile installs flush at floor level, eliminating trip hazards while providing smooth, controlled gate movement. Once in place, the hardware visually recedes—allowing the gates and surrounding architecture to take precedence.
Robert James Custom Metal Fab worked with AIDI beginning in March 2025 to price, specify, and coordinate the recessed track system. After review, the Comunello Half Round Recessed Ground Track System was selected as the optimal solution.
The sliding pocket gates perform exactly as intended.
When open, the courtyard flows cleanly between buildings, reinforcing the campus-style layout. When closed, the gates define a sheltered, flexible space for company gatherings and events. Underfoot, the recessed track remains flush and unobtrusive—no visual clutter, no safety concerns.
The system aligns with the project’s broader material language: exposed structure, durable components, and details that support the architecture without calling attention to themselves.
This project demonstrates how something as seemingly simple as a hardware decision can support both architectural intent and real-world use. The Comunello 287FP-G Half Round Recessed Ground Track allowed the design team to preserve clean floor lines while delivering a durable, high-performance sliding gate system suited for a modern corporate headquarters.
As AIDI can attest from experience, the Comunello Recessed Ground Track system is an excellent gate installation solution, suitable for large openings, frequent use, and environments where details matter.
