Before painting or adding a patina to a metal surface, it should be clean and free of any dirt or grease. This is particularly true when working with iron, steel or aluminum. The rust, fire scale and polishing compound must be removed. The best method for cleaning most metal is to sandblast but sometimes this is not an option. Wire wheels or Scotch-Brite Pads are another method of cleaning and so is Sculpt Nouveau’s Metal Cleaner/Degreaser. It works on both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. This cleaner is specifically formulated for the rapid and complete removal of rust, dirt, oil and grease from most iron surfaces in preparation for metal finishing.

It is not advised to use solvent based thinners (acetone, paint thinners and the like) these products leave a residue on the metal and will interfere and alter how the paint will adhere or if applying a patina, how it will react.
