Private Homeowner

Many times, customers have specific visions and need the right experts to bring everything together. For the owners of a proud estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, it was important to create a specific look for their garden trellis.

With a creative architect, an experienced fabricator, and a knowledgeable and resourceful supplier, these homeowners got the trellis of their dreams.

Planting the Seeds of Inspiration

Architectural Fence and Gate Fabricators (AFG) worked alongside the architects at Cornerstone Builders and Jay Shah, President of AIDI and friend of 25 years, to come up with a game plan for nailing the details of this multi-sided trellis.

The home was built in 1942, and the family wanted to maintain the look and aesthetic of the original build. The trellis is an extension of the customer’s office, which serves as a studio, and the homeowners were looking to make the private entrance a bit more... private.

While AFG’s high-end client values privacy, they didn’t want to completely hide the garden. The design they came up with in tandem with the architects at Cornerstone gives the homeowner a sense of security and seclusion without feeling entirely cut off from the rest of the outside area.

How the Garden Grew

Architectural Fence and Gate Fabricators builds custom wood, composites, stainless steel, iron, aluminum, and glass fencing throughout Fairfield County, CT. AFG also provides quality fence installation for homeowners and business owners alike.

Known for taking on complex projects, AFG was called upon to build a sturdy but attractive addition to this garden. Normally, the trellis would be made from vinyl or wood. The team at AFG suggested to the architect that they use aluminum to custom fabricate the entire structure. This would allow for customization while increasing durability.

There are several preexisting systems to create a cookie-cutter trellis, but here, the design called for parts that don’t exist in prefabricated trellis systems. Additionally, the design had a specific height along with some curves and custom details.

This is where AIDI came in. AIDI offered to custom-cast some of the details of the trellis that were not standard. AFG created drawings for the moldings used across on the top, middle, and bottom. The post caps also had to be custom cast.

AIDI was able to leverage its network of foundries in India to get those parts made. Mold-making turned out to be a challenge due to the size and weight of the pieces, as well as the intricate details. They were all made by CNC machines and then custom-cast in solid aluminum.

The Fruits of Our Labor

In the end, it all worked out, and everyone involved in the project was ecstatic with the outcome. As you can see in the photos, the trellis blocks off the garden and studio entrance from the rest of the property, providing some privacy without completely shutting out the rest of the world.
