Galveston RV Resort & Marina

Nestled along Offatts Bayou on the bay side of Galveston Island, Galveston RV Resort & Marina blends coastal charm with modern convenience. The resort offers a mix of family-friendly recreation, waterfront relaxation, and long-term community living.

But as the resort continues to grow in popularity, one priority becomes clear:

The goal was to transform the property into a gated community—protecting full-time residents while maintaining a seamless experience for short-term guests.

 

The Objective

Improve Security Without Disrupting the Guest Experience

The resort installed a picket-style sliding gate across a 30-foot entrance span—opting for a ground-track V-groove rolling gate system to handle the width and environmental exposure of coastal Texas.

The installation was completed in-house by the park’s highly skilled maintenance staff—a true DIY effort backed by professional-grade hardware.

The Challenge

One Gate. Two Types of Residents. Coastal Conditions.

Unlike a typical private estate or commercial facility, Galveston RV Resort & Marina needed to balance:

     • Full-time residents

     • Temporary guests

     • Frequent daily in-and-out traffic

     • Coastal humidity and fog

The complexity wasn’t just mechanical—it was operational.

The initial challenges weren’t mechanical — they were operational. The team had to determine how the access control system should function differently for full-time residents versus short-term guests. That meant building a workflow that was secure, intuitive, and flexible enough to handle constant turnover.

Training both permanent residents and temporary visitors added another layer of complexity. At the same time, the installation process uncovered wiring issues, short circuits, and intermittent control problems that required troubleshooting and adjustment. Selecting the right access control integration strategy ultimately became as critical as the hardware itself. 

One key learning: not choosing an experienced access control dealer at the outset added avoidable friction to the process

The Solution

The Big Environmental Problem

Fog vs. Photoeyes

The most significant challenge came from the coastal environment.

Because the entrance spans 30 feet, a reflective photo eye required a 60-foot transmission distance. In Galveston’s humid bay climate, fog and condensation formed on the reflector surface—scattering and degrading the signal.

The result? The gate would shut down unexpectedly.

A second, higher-end reflective photocell was installed—but the issue persisted.

The solution: Switching to through-beam photocells, which are more costly to purchase and install, but far more reliable in high-moisture environments.

Vendor support from Allomatic, Miller Edge and Optex was critical in diagnosing and resolving the environmental interference.

Today, the V-groove sliding gate operates as intended—providing:

     • Controlled community access

     • Durable performance in a coastal climate

     • Seamless entry for residents and guests

     • Enhanced peace of mind for park management

The project reinforced the importance of planning access control around user behavior, not just system capabilities.
